About DEQ

The Begining

Prof. A.N. Khosla, Vice-chancellor of University of Roorkee (1954-59), visited California Institute of Technology (Caltech, USA) in 1957 with a mission to transform the seismic resilience of our country.

He persuaded Prof. G. W. Housner, President of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) California and Prof. Donald E. Hudson Professor of the California Institute of Technology, Pasedena, to visit University of Roorkee in 1958.

This visit paved way for the organization of the first Symposium of Earthquake Engineering on February 10-12, 1959. An optional course was also introduced in Structural Dynamics at the Post-graduate level.

Amalgamation of the above events led to the establishment of the School for Research and Training in Earthquake Engineering (SRTEE) under CSIR in 1960 with Prof. Jai Krishna as its first Director from 1960-71.

In 1971, Universi ty Grants Commission (UGC) took over the temporary administration of SRTEE under University of Roorkee and it emerged as Department of Earthquake Engineering (DEQ) with Prof. A.S. Arya as its first Head.
